Abstracts for conference proceedings articles are not posted in COOLNEWS. The subject matter should pertain directly to cool stars (spectral types F,G,K,M or L), substellar objects, or the sun. Both theoretical and observational abstracts are appropriate. Abstracts dealing with cool pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars will generally not be included in COOLNEWS, since they are already covered by the Star Formation Newsletter. Exceptions to this rule will be considered if the subject matter is truly cross-disciplinary. If you wish to submit a cross-disciplinary abstract on PMS stars, then first submit it to the Star Formation Newsletter. After doing so, submit the abstract to COOLNEWS accompanied by a short e-mail stating that it has already been submitted to the Star Formation Newsletter, and summarizing why it will be of interest to the cool star/solar community at large.s dealing with cool pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars will generally not be included in COOLNEWS, since they are already covered by the Star Formation Newsletter. A monthly call for abstracts will be issued and abstracts received by the last day of the month will usually appear in the following month’s newsletter. Announcements of general interest to the cool star and solar communities may also be submitted for posting in the newsletter. These might include (but are not restricted to) the following: (i) Job Openings directed toward cool star or solar researchers, (ii) announcements of Upcoming Meetings, (iii) announcements of Upcoming Observing Campaigns for which participation is solicited from the community at large, (iv) reviews of New Books, and (v) General Announcements that provide or request research-related information. Please send all correspondence to the editor at [email protected]. Abstract templates and back issues can be obtained from the COOLNEWS Web-page at http://casa.colorado.edu/~skinners/coolnews.html . *** Please send abstracts in the body of the message and not as attachments.***

Collisionless Damping of Fast Mhd Waves in Magneto-rotational Winds

We propose collisionless damping of fast MHD waves as an important mechanism for the heating and acceleration of winds from rotating stars. Stellar rotation causes magnetic field lines anchored at the surface to form a spiral pattern and magneto-rotational winds can be driven. If the structure is a magnetically dominated, fast MHD waves generated at the surface can propagate almost radially out...

Lithium Depletion in Pre-mainsequence Solar-like Stars

We examine the internal structure of solar-like stars in detail between 0.8 and 1.4 M⊙ and during pre-main sequence phase. Recent opacity computations of OPAL along with a new hydrodynamical mixing process have been considered. We also introduce up-to-date nuclear reaction rates and explore the impact of accretion, mixing-length parameter, non-solar distributions among metals and realistic rota...

A Physical Mechanism for Self-Organization in Solar and Stellar Coronae: Theory and Observations

The existence of power law statistics in solar and stellar flares has prompted the suggestion that solar and stellar coronae are in a self-organized critical state, but the physical foundation of this theory is lacking. We present observational evidence from 107 flare events in 37 sun-like stars that solar and stellar coronae self-organize into a critical state set by a bifurcation in the dynam...

Confirmation of bistable stellar differential rotation profiles

Context. Solar-like differential rotation is characterized by a rapidly rotating equator and slower poles. However, theoretical models and numerical simulations can also result in a slower equator and faster poles when the overall rotation is slow. Aims. We study the critical rotational influence under which differential rotation flips from solar-like (fast equator, slow poles) to an anti-solar...

How accurately can we age-date solar-type dwarfs using activity/rotation diagnostics?

It is well established that activity and rotation diminishes during the life of sun-like main sequence (∼F7-K2V) stars. Indeed, the evolution of rotation and activity among these stars appears to be so deterministic that their rotation/activity diagnostics are often utilized as estimators of stellar age. A primary motivation for the recent interest in improving the ages of solar-type field dwar...
